How to get your visa papers ready

Every country has its own rules, and they change, so start with the visa page for your destination. Most applications ask for the same few things.
What you usually need
- A passport that is valid well beyond your return date, with blank pages
- Recent photos to the size the country asks for
- Your flight and hotel bookings
- Proof that you can pay for the trip, such as bank statements
- A letter from your employer or school, for some countries
Give yourself time
Apply as early as the country allows. Processing times vary, and a missing document can mean starting again.
